Hartford Chapter

From The Ground Up

The Jamaica Progressive League Inc.

Overview

The Jamaica Progressive League came about as a result of some concerned Jamaicans living in the United States (New York) who wanted to do something about the deplorable conditions existing in colonial Jamaica; and also to help Jamaicans living here in the U.S.A. It was launched in September 1936.

The founding President was Adolph Roberts and among the officers were: Wilfred Domingo, first vice president and one time editor of the Negro World, Garvey’s Newspaper and the Reverend Ethelred Brown as secretary.

The work of the League was far-reaching and touched on some serious issues affecting Jamaica’s socio-economic and political situation. The League adopted a program so far reaching that it was incorporated into the programmatic platform of the Peoples National Party which was launched in September 1938.

Other chapters were launched in Kingston, Philadelphia, Washington and in 1974 the Hartford Chapter was born. Over the years the Chapter has been engaged in a number of activities - cultural, social, and educational in the Hartford community and has provided vital assistance to the Jamaican people. The League has become a vital part of the community by providing an outlet not only for entertainment but by helping people improving their lives.
